Below‐ground ecosystem engineers enhance biodiversity and function in a polluted ecosystem

چکیده
Many important ecosystem functions are underpinned by below-ground biodiversity and processes. Marine sediments, one of the most abundant habitats on earth, essential to mineralisation organic matter. However, they increasingly polluted urban activities leading loss provide. While traditional sediment remediation strategies focussed microbial engineering solutions, we propose that reintroduction engineers (bioturbators) is rehabilitate sediments drive recovery their in coastal ecosystems. We tested this notion introducing bioturbators nutrient assess survival, as well capacity oxygenation potential remediate pollution. Polychaete worms Diopatra aciculata clams Katelysia sp. were added mesocosms (ex-situ), also experimental plots in-situ. Potential for was assessed with measures content. All animals survived when introduced showed no evidence sub-lethal effects. Worms oxygenated reduced matter content up 50% The drove shifts receiving communities at all locations increased number taxa location. On other hand, effects variable, showing opposite different sites levels Synthesis applications. Global seafloor becoming degraded novel combine restoration urgently needed return function. Tube-building can stimulate processing proving multiple functional outcomes, but these dependent environment. In areas medium pollution, kick-start a feedback loop whereby bioturbation increases remediation, shifting contributing further recovery. This long-term changes communities, particularly where unvegetated conspicuous.

Biodiversity and Ecosystem Stability
Introduction: Biodiversity, Stability, and Ecosystem Functioning Climate change and other human-driven (anthropogenic) environmental changes will continue to cause biodiversity loss in the coming decades (Sala et al. 2000), in addition to the high rates of species extinctions already occurring worldwide (Stork 2010). Biodiversity is a term that can be used to describe biological diversity at a ...
متن کاملBiodiversity and Ecosystem Functioning
Species diversity is a major determinant of ecosystem productivity, stability, invasibility, and nutrient dynamics. Hundreds of studies spanning terrestrial, aquatic, and marine ecosystems show that high-diversity mixtures are approximately twice as productive as monocultures of the same species and that this difference increases through time. These impacts of higher diversity have multiple cau...
متن کاملThe links between ecosystem multifunctionality and above- and belowground biodiversity are mediated by climate
Plant biodiversity is often correlated with ecosystem functioning in terrestrial ecosystems. However, we know little about the relative and combined effects of above- and belowground biodiversity on multiple ecosystem functions (for example, ecosystem multifunctionality, EMF) or how climate might mediate those relationships. Here we tease apart the effects of biotic and abiotic factors, both ab...
